What it does
Agentplane is a CLI that separates the judgment calls of a coding agent from the repeatable mechanics of a workflow. The agent understands the problem, plans, writes code and tests it. The CLI enforces policy, tracks task state, routes Git and pull-request work, observes checks and records how each task closes or recovers. The project is explicit that it does not make the model deterministic; it makes the control layer around the model deterministic and inspectable. Work is handed to an agent as a bounded episode with a defined writable scope and a typed result, and approval points return control to a human. Records are kept in the repository itself, including a policy file, a workflow contract and a machine-readable Agent Change Record for each task that captures intent, changed files, verification evidence and review status. Two modes are offered: a lighter direct route for solo work, and a branch_pr route that adds a task branch and worktree, PR artifacts and hosted checks. It needs Node.js 24 or later, Git and a terminal, and no Agentplane account. The project describes itself as pre-1.0 and under active development, and says it is not a model provider, chatbot builder or replacement for Git or CI.
Capabilities
- Bounded task episodes handed to Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Aider or another repository-capable agent
- Task state, plans and verification evidence stored in the repository
- Machine-readable Agent Change Record for each task
- Direct and branch_pr workflow modes
- Policy and authority enforced by the CLI, with human approval boundaries
- Local-first, with no account required
When to use it
- Agent-written changes must stay reviewable after the chat or IDE session ends
- Several coding agents need to share one task, policy and verification contract
- Maintainers want agent-generated pull requests to carry intent, scope, checks and evidence
