AI Kernel Explorer

A small command-line tool, installed with pip, that asks an OpenAI model to write summaries of Linux kernel source code as you explore a local copy of the tree.

Command-line tools

What it does

The Linux kernel has over 30 million lines of code, which can be hard for newcomers to navigate. AI Kernel Explorer is described as a lightweight tool that generates summaries of the kernel source while you explore it. Install it with pip or pipx and point it at a directory holding the kernel source; the default is /usr/src. It uses GPT-4o by default, you supply your OpenAI API key through an environment variable or a command-line option, and the model can be changed with a flag. AI responses are stored in a cache directory, which defaults to a folder under ~/.cache and can be changed. The project is MIT licensed.

Capabilities

  • AI-generated summaries of Linux kernel source code
  • Uses GPT-4o by default, with the OpenAI model selectable by flag
  • Takes the kernel source root as an argument
  • Stores AI responses in a configurable cache path
  • Installs with pip or pipx

When to use it

  • You are new to the Linux kernel codebase and want plain-language summaries while reading it
  • You already have the kernel source locally and an OpenAI API key
