What it does
Aura adds a record of meaning next to Git. Each commit is parsed into functions and classes, compared on the syntax tree, and stored with the intent behind it and who or what made the change. The record is signed and kept in the repository, and no server is required. A pre-commit hook compares the stated intent with the changes actually made, and the aura why command answers why a file or line changed. Aura also offers function-level rewind, semantic review of architectural drift and silent deletions, and tracking of AI usage and cost. It ships as a command-line tool, a desktop app and a VS Code extension, and it detects sessions from agents including Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Codex CLI, Cursor and OpenCode. It also runs an MCP server. Data stays on your machine unless you turn on cloud sync, and the code is released under Apache 2.0.
Capabilities
- Signed per-commit record of what changed and why
- Pre-commit check comparing stated intent with the actual code change
- Function-level rewind without undoing the whole commit
- Semantic review that flags layer violations and silent deletions
- MCP server and session detection for several coding agents
- Local storage, with cloud sync only if configured
When to use it
- Several coding agents commit to your repository and you need to see which one changed what
- You need a signed provenance record for AI-written code to give an auditor
- You want to stop commits that touch code unrelated to their stated purpose
