What it does

ChatPDF lets you upload a document and ask questions about it in a conversation. The site pitches it for studying, researching and analyzing documents, with answers tied to citations that point back to the source so you can check them. Beyond PDFs, the site lists support for Word (.doc, .docx), PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx), Markdown and plain text files. You can group files in a folder and ask questions that compare or connect several documents in one conversation. Documents can be in any language, and you can ask in a different language from the one the document uses. The chat is shown beside the document, and clicking a citation scrolls to the matching spot in the PDF. According to the site, queries are routed dynamically between GPT-4o and GPT-4o-mini. Documents are private by default, with optional secure share links that others can open without an account. No account is needed to try it; a free account adds saved history and multi-document chats. The site states that files are encrypted in transit and in storage and that you can delete your documents at any time.
