CodeAlmanac

Command-line tool that keeps a markdown knowledge base inside a code repository, filled in by Codex or Claude Code from your files and agent conversations, so coding agents can recall why the code is the way it is.

What it does

CodeAlmanac builds a wiki inside a code repository for the things source files cannot say on their own, such as past decisions, earlier breakages, constraints that must hold and flows that span several files. The pages are plain markdown in an almanac folder, indexed on your machine and open to review through Git. Running setup writes instructions for the agent tools you choose and creates three scheduled local jobs on macOS. One looks through recent Codex and Claude conversations for knowledge worth keeping, one checks each registered wiki for out-of-date, repeated or poorly connected pages, and one installs CLI updates. Commands such as init, ingest and garden run an agent through the Yoke SDK to write or tidy pages, while search and show read them back and serve opens a read-only local web viewer. It needs Python 3.12 or later and currently supports macOS, using Codex or Claude Code as the AI runner. The repository says there are no hosted login or upload commands, and anonymous usage telemetry is optional and can be switched off.

Capabilities

  • Markdown wiki stored in the repository and indexed locally
  • Scheduled scans of Codex and Claude conversations for knowledge worth keeping
  • Ingest from files, Git diffs, commit ranges, pull requests, issues and URLs
  • Garden pass that reviews pages for staleness, duplicates and weak links
  • Search and show commands plus a read-only local web viewer
  • Job history with logs you can follow or cancel

When to use it

  • You want coding agents to start with the history and reasoning behind a codebase.
  • You prefer project knowledge kept as reviewable markdown in Git rather than in a hosted service.
  • You already use Codex or Claude Code on macOS.
