What it does
Copilot Workspace was GitHub's task-oriented, agentic development environment, run as a technical preview. The page states that the preview was sunset on May 30th, 2025, so it is no longer available. You described a task in natural language, such as an issue, a pull request to iterate on or a new project. The tool read the codebase and wrote a specification with two bullet lists, one for the current state and one for the desired state. It then produced a plan listing each file to create, modify or delete, and generated the changes. The spec, the plan and the resulting diff could all be edited, and changing an earlier step regenerated the steps after it. The site also describes a brainstorm agent for discussing ideas and a repair agent that proposed fixes for failing tests based on the error. Changes could be run in an integrated terminal with port forwarding or in a Codespace with live sync, shared as a workspace snapshot, and turned into a pull request in one click. The FAQ says it was powered by GPT-4o at the time and that access required a paid Copilot Individual, Business or Enterprise subscription.
