DevSpecs

Local-first command-line tool that keeps the thread of AI coding work attached to your repo, so you can return after an agent runs and see why changes exist and what to review next. It makes no LLM calls.

What it does

DevSpecs is a command-line tool, run as ds, that reads the context already in your repo, including docs, specs, plans, commits and task records, and keeps evidence, decisions, checkpoints and handoffs connected. Git shows what an agent changed; DevSpecs aims to show why it changed and what comes next. Commands such as ds recent recover the active thread when you come back cold, and ds task bounds a piece of work into a task with packed context, gates and checkpoints. It writes local task files and a local SQLite index. It is local-first with no cloud sync and no LLM calls of its own: it indexes local artifacts and emits context that your existing coding agent can use. It does not replace an issue tracker. The site offers installs through Homebrew, a macOS and Linux script, Scoop and Go, plus a guided try-out on the FastAPI repository.

Capabilities

  • Recovers the work thread after an agent has run
  • Task specs with packed context, gates and checkpoints
  • Indexes plans, source, tests and commit history
  • Local-first, with no cloud sync and no LLM calls
  • Works alongside the coding agents you already use

When to use it

  • You return to a repo after an agent has been working and need to know what happened
  • You hand work between people and coding agents and want checkpoints
  • You want persistent context for agents without cloud sync
