What it does

Gemini Code Assist brings Gemini into your IDE with a chat that is aware of your code, automatic completions as you type, and generation or transformation of whole functions or files on request. It supports VS Code, JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ and PyCharm, Cloud Workstations and Android Studio. The page says the free version brings Gemini 2.5, with Gemini 3 listed as coming soon, and cites a context window of 1M tokens. Agent mode can handle multi-file edits with full project context, built-in tools and MCP integrations, keeping a human in the loop. The same subscription gives access to Gemini CLI, an open source agent for the terminal. A separate GitHub app reviews pull requests for bugs and style issues, suggests fixes, and can be asked for help with a /gemini comment. Gemini assistance also appears in Firebase, BigQuery, Colab Enterprise, Cloud Run, Apigee and Application Integration, and Cloud Shell Editor comes with it pre-installed. There is a no-cost version for individual developers with no credit card required, and Standard and Enterprise versions for businesses that add security and management tools, IP indemnification and, for Enterprise, customisation from private code repositories.
