What it does
GPT Pilot is a Python program that tries to build complete apps with a large language model while a developer oversees the work. After you enter an app name and description, a chain of agents takes over: a specification writer asks clarifying questions, an architect chooses and installs technologies, a tech lead breaks the work into tasks, a developer and a code monkey write and apply the changes, and reviewer, troubleshooter, debugger and technical writer agents handle review, feedback, debugging and documentation. Setup needs Python 3.9 or newer and a config.json file with an API key for OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq, with SQLite as the default database and PostgreSQL optional. Generated code goes into a workspace folder named after the app. Command-line options list projects, resume from the latest or a chosen step, and delete projects. The README calls GPT Pilot the core technology behind the Pythagora VS Code extension. The repository says it is not maintained anymore and points to Pythagora.ai. It also shows a security notice: a malicious commit made on 2025-08-24 added a hidden loader that ran a credential-stealing payload; it was reported on 2026-06-08 and removed on 2026-06-11. The notice advises anyone who ran GPT Pilot from source in that period to rotate credentials and check for the listed indicators.
Capabilities
- Chain of role-based agents from specification to documentation
- Asks clarifying questions when the project description is thin
- Shows the model only the code relevant to the current task
- Lets the developer review and step in when the AI gets stuck
- List, resume or delete projects from the command line
- OpenAI, Anthropic or Groq as the model provider
When to use it
- Researching how LLM-driven app generation with developer oversight was approached
- Reading the security notice if you ran the tool from source between August 2025 and June 2026
