What it does

Haystack is an open-source AI orchestration framework. You install it with pip and assemble pipelines that cover each step of an AI application, from retrieval to reasoning, memory and tool use. The site says its modular design lets you inspect and debug what the system does at each step. It connects to model and data providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Hugging Face, Weaviate, Pinecone and Elasticsearch, so you can mix components without being tied to one vendor. Pipelines can branch and loop, are serializable and cloud-agnostic, and are ready for Kubernetes, with logging, monitoring and deployment guides. Use cases listed on the site include retrieval-augmented generation, AI agents with standard tool calling, multimodal apps that handle images and audio, conversational bots, and content generation using Jinja-2 templates. The current release shown is Haystack 3.4. deepset also sells Haystack Enterprise Support, with private engineering help, templates and deployment guides at pricing that depends on company size, and an AI Orchestration Platform with visual pipeline design, access controls and cloud or on-premises deployment.

Capabilities

  • Modular pipelines for retrieval, reasoning, memory and tool use
  • Connectors for providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Weaviate and Pinecone
  • Branching and looping pipelines for multi-step agent logic
  • Serializable, cloud-agnostic, Kubernetes-ready pipelines with logging and monitoring
  • Jinja-2 prompt templates for content generation
  • Optional enterprise support and a visual orchestration platform

When to use it

  • You are building RAG pipelines and want control over retrieval and generation steps
  • You want to build AI agents in Python with standardized tool calling
  • You need to swap model or database providers without rewriting your application
  • Your company wants vendor support or a visual platform on top of an open-source framework
