What it does
Jan is a free, open-source personal AI app you download for Mac. You can choose from open models or plug in online models, and the site shows ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral, Qwen, DeepSeek, Gemma and Kimi among the options. Beyond the app, the site describes Jan Agent, a core agent distributed separately that you can run on your own VM or container. It also describes Tokamak, a self-hosted backend with a router, a fusion model and governance and audit features that Jan agents connect to. A memory feature that carries your context and preferences between conversations is marked as coming soon. Jan is built in public on GitHub, publishes models on Hugging Face and lists version 0.8.4 as its latest release.
