What it does
Open Data Platform by OpenBB (ODP) is an open-source toolset for data engineers who want to bring proprietary, licensed and public data sources into downstream applications such as AI copilots and research dashboards. The idea is to connect a source once and consume it in several places: Python for quants, OpenBB Workspace and Excel for analysts, MCP servers for AI agents, and REST APIs for other applications. In Python you install the openbb package and call functions such as obb.equity.price.historical for a ticker, then convert the result to a dataframe. Running openbb-api starts a local FastAPI server that can be connected to OpenBB Workspace, a separate interface where analysts visualize datasets and use AI agents. A command-line interface is available as openbb-cli. The README says the data in the platform is not necessarily accurate and includes a risk disclaimer about trading in financial instruments. The code is distributed under the Apache License 2.0.
Capabilities
- Connect data sources once and reuse them across Python, Excel, Workspace, MCP and REST
- Python package with calls such as obb.equity.price.historical that return dataframes
- Local FastAPI server started with openbb-api
- MCP servers for giving AI agents access to the data
- Command-line interface installed with openbb-cli
- Connects to OpenBB Workspace for visualization and AI agents
When to use it
- You manage data sources and want one integration layer feeding analysts, quants and AI agents
- You want financial data in Python as dataframes
- You want to serve your own data to OpenBB Workspace from a local backend
