What it does
Paperclip is a Node.js server with a React interface for coordinating several AI agents toward shared goals. It looks like a task manager: you set a goal, arrange agents in roles with reporting lines, approve the plan, and watch progress and spend from a dashboard. It does not supply the agents. You bring your own, and the site lists OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Pi, Hermes, Grok Build and Kimi Code, plus custom processes and HTTP endpoints. Agents wake on heartbeats for assigned work, follow-up messages or schedules. Controls include company, agent and project budgets with threshold alerts and hard stops, review and approval stages, an activity log, recurring routines triggered by cron, webhook or API, and company-scoped data so one deployment can host several organisations. The project is open source under the MIT licence and self-hosted, with no Paperclip account required. A local install starts from a single npx command with an embedded PostgreSQL database, and a Docker image is available. The site also mentions a Paperclip Cloud waitlist.
Capabilities
- Org charts with roles, reporting lines and permissions for agents
- Ticket-style tasks with approvals and review gates
- Budgets and spend tracking with alerts and hard stops
- Scheduled routines triggered by cron, webhook or API
- Works with agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenClaw
- Several organisations in one deployment
When to use it
- You run many coding or work agents at once and lose track of what each one is doing
- You want budget limits and an audit trail around autonomous agent work
- You prefer to self-host the control layer rather than use a hosted service
