Reflex

Open-source code search tool that indexes a project locally and exposes text, symbol and dependency queries through a command line and an MCP server for AI coding agents.

What it does

Reflex indexes a project on your machine and searches it without any cloud service. It can be used from the command line, in scripts, or by AI coding assistants that support MCP, such as Claude Code and Cursor, and the site describes its results as deterministic and available offline. Beyond plain text search it offers symbol-aware lookups using Tree-sitter, regex and AST queries, reference finding, and import and dependency analysis, including circular and unused files. Full symbol extraction is listed for 15 languages, among them Rust, Python, Go, Java, TypeScript and JavaScript, and results can be returned as JSON. Over MCP an agent can call tools such as search_code, find_references and get_dependencies. Optional extras include a natural-language ask command that needs an AI provider you configure, and a generator that builds a documentation site from the index. The project is MIT licensed and installs through npm or Cargo. Its own benchmark notes say it does not reduce token use compared with built-in search; the benefit is added capability.

Capabilities

  • Local-first full-text code search that works offline
  • Symbol-aware queries using Tree-sitter, plus regex and AST search
  • Dependency analysis of imports, reverse imports, circular and unused files
  • Built-in MCP server with tools such as search_code and find_references
  • JSON output for scripts and agents
  • Optional natural-language search through an AI provider you configure

When to use it

  • Giving an AI coding agent precise symbol and reference lookups over a large codebase
  • Finding every usage of a symbol or mapping what imports a file
  • Searching code in scripts or CI with machine-readable output
  • Searching a codebase locally without relying on a cloud service
