What it does
Roo Code described itself as a whole dev team of AI agents living in your code editor. It generated code from plain-language descriptions and specs, refactored and debugged existing code, wrote and updated documentation, and answered questions about a codebase. Work was organised into modes. Code mode handled everyday edits and file operations, Architect mode planned systems, specs and migrations, Ask mode gave quick explanations, and Debug mode traced issues and isolated root causes. Teams could also define custom modes, and the agents could use MCP servers to reach other tools. The project's page now states that the Roo Code extension was shut down on 15 May and the GitHub repository was archived on 15 May 2026, so it is read-only. The code remains available under the Apache-2.0 licence. The notice points people looking for a replacement to ZooCode, a community fork, and to Cline, the project Roo Code originated from. Former paying users are told to contact the company's billing address.
