TmuxAI

Open-source terminal assistant that runs inside tmux, reads what is on your panes and proposes commands for you to approve, with prepare and watch modes.

Command-line tools

What it does

TmuxAI runs in a tmux window next to your own work and behaves like a colleague looking at your screen. It reads what is displayed across your terminal panes in real time and uses that context to help with what you are actually doing. Setup needs no special shell, wrapper or terminal emulator: you install it with a one-line script and run it in your existing tmux. It works with nested shells, SSH sessions, database CLIs and network-equipment shells such as Cisco IOS and Juniper. In the site's demo it proposes each command and asks for a yes, no or edit before running it, and it can send keystrokes to another pane, for example to log in to a MySQL shell. Prepare mode adds custom shell prompts so it knows exactly when a command finished and what exit code it returned. Watch mode makes it proactive: it keeps an eye on what happens in the terminal and volunteers explanations or improvements tied to a goal you give it. The project is open source under the Apache License 2.0.

When to use it

  • You already work in tmux and want an assistant that sees your real terminal state.
  • You work over SSH or in database and network-device shells and want help there.
  • You prefer an open-source assistant that asks before running commands.
