What it does
Trailhead is a skill that orchestrates coding agents, authored once and installed into Claude Code (as a plugin or through npm) or Codex CLI. It turns a loose idea into a map: one GitHub issue that indexes the destination, the decisions made so far and the questions still open, with child issues as tickets. Discussion, plans and verification are kept as issue comments, so there is no local planning folder and the whole team can see the plan. Tickets have types such as research, decision, prototype, build, bug and task, each handled by a matching engine. Build tickets run a discuss, plan, execute and verify cycle with atomic commits. Assigning a ticket to yourself claims it, each session resolves a single ticket, and tickets can be paused, resumed or split. Optional git worktree or clone isolation keeps concurrent sessions apart, and one repository can carry multiple maps in parallel. It needs an authenticated gh CLI and a GitHub repository, plus Node 18 or later for the npm install. Once installed, a commit guard hook checks every git commit for Conventional Commits format and rejects Co-Authored-By trailers; the README says the hooks can be switched off in settings.
Capabilities
- Project map as a parent GitHub issue with child tickets
- Ticket types for research, decisions, prototypes, builds, bugs and tasks
- Discuss, plan, execute and verify cycle with atomic commits
- Claiming by assignee, with pause, resume and split
- Optional git worktree or clone isolation per ticket
- Runs on both Claude Code and Codex CLI
When to use it
- You have a large, vague project with open decisions and want a shared plan on GitHub Issues.
- Several people or agents need to work the same plan without colliding.
- You want agent work split into reviewable single-ticket chunks with a verification step.
