What it does
Claw Code is the public Rust implementation of the claw CLI agent harness. You build it from source with cargo, set an API key for a model provider, check the setup with claw doctor, and then run a single prompt or start an interactive session. Claude subscription login is not a supported way to authenticate. The maintainers describe the repository as an agent-managed exhibit, kept up by agents with no human intervention, and say it is not the serious production project. For real work they point to LazyCodex or Gajae-Code. The repository states it is not affiliated with Anthropic and does not claim ownership of the original Claude Code source material. The docs cover Windows PowerShell setup, a container workflow, and setup for local OpenAI-compatible providers such as Ollama, llama.cpp and vLLM. One caution from the README: the claw-code crate on crates.io is a deprecated stub that only prints a rename notice, so installing it with cargo install does not give you the tool. ACP and Zed support is not shipped yet.
Capabilities
- Rust CLI binary named claw with one-shot prompt and interactive modes
- claw doctor health check for the API key, model access and tool configuration
- Authenticates with provider API keys such as Anthropic and OpenAI
- Documented setup for local OpenAI-compatible providers
- Build from source on macOS, Linux and Windows, with a container workflow
When to use it
- You want to try a Rust coding-agent CLI against your own API key or a local OpenAI-compatible server
- You want to inspect the project's code, roadmap and parity notes for how an agent harness is put together
