What The Diff

Connects to GitHub or GitLab and writes plain-language descriptions of pull request changes, plus team summaries, weekly reports, changelogs and refactoring suggestions.

What it does

What the Diff is an AI app that reads the diff of a pull request and posts a comment explaining the change in plain language. You sign in with GitHub or GitLab, choose which repositories to enable, and keep opening pull requests as usual. Beyond descriptions, it can send simplified, translated summaries to non-technical teammates through Slack, email or webhooks, compile a weekly report of what shipped, publish a public changelog with a JSON API, and help refactor code when you ask in a pull request comment. Granular controls let you pick repositories, skip CI pull requests and delay drafts. Usage is measured in tokens that grow with the size of the diff; the site puts an average pull request at about 2,300 tokens. Unused tokens do not roll over, and plans are not upgraded automatically. The site says it does not store your code or train on it, and that it needs full repository access because GitHub and GitLab offer no permission limited to reading a diff.

Capabilities

  • Automatic pull request descriptions
  • Summaries for non-technical teammates via Slack, email or webhooks
  • Weekly progress reports
  • Refactoring requests from pull request comments
  • Public changelogs with a JSON API
  • Per-repository, CI and draft controls

When to use it

  • Teams that want pull request descriptions written for them
  • Keeping product or management staff informed without having them read diffs
  • Maintainers who want to share a public changelog of what is new
