What it does

Zed is a minimal code editor from Zed Industries, built for speed and for working with both people and AI. It is written from scratch in Rust to use multiple CPU cores and the GPU, and it runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. On the AI side, you can run agents in parallel, follow their progress live and review the changes they make. An inline assistant sends selected code to a language model to be transformed in place, and edit prediction suggests what you will type next using Zeta2, which the site calls an open-weight model. The site says Zed does not tie you to one model, and that you can bring agents such as Claude Agent, Codex or OpenCode through ACP and connect MCP servers. The rest is a full editor: a debugger built on the Debug Adapter Protocol, Git operations, remote development where only the interface runs locally, multibuffer editing, Vim and Helix modes, language server support, dev containers, a built-in REPL using Jupyter kernels and a command-line tool. Hundreds of extensions add languages and themes, and teammates can chat, code together and share screens. The page does not give pricing.
