Google brings Gemini Spark to Mac with desktop file actions and connected apps

Google has launched Gemini Spark in the Gemini app for macOS, adding local desktop-file workflows, real-time topic tracking, and integrations with Google Keep, Google Tasks, Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals for eligible users.

Google has launched Gemini Spark for the Gemini macOS app, expanding its agentic assistant from web-based tasks into desktop workflows on Apple computers.

Gemini Spark arrives on macOS

In an announcement on the Google Blog, Google said Gemini Spark is now available in the Gemini app for macOS and can help users take actions involving files on their computer. Google’s Gemini for macOS product page says the assistant can clean folders, summarize local files into Google Docs and Sheets, and organize or rename files in connected folders.

The launch marks a notable expansion of Gemini Spark because it brings the assistant closer to everyday desktop work, rather than limiting it to chat-style responses. MacRumors also reported that the macOS version supports local-file actions through Google’s desktop app, while TechCrunch described the release as bringing Gemini Spark to Mac with desktop file workflows.

Google says access is limited to eligible Google AI Ultra users, according to the Gemini for macOS page.

Connected apps include Keep, Tasks, Canva and Dropbox

Google’s announcement also highlights new and expanded app connections. The Google Blog lists integrations with Google Keep and Google Tasks, along with third-party services including Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable and Zillow Rentals.

According to TechCrunch, these integrations are meant to let Gemini Spark handle more multi-step activities across services, such as using notes, task lists, design tools, cloud files, shopping, restaurant booking and rental-search contexts. MacRumors similarly corroborated the list of connected apps and said the update adds support for Google Keep, Tasks, Canva, Dropbox and Instacart among other services.

Google has not framed these integrations as replacing the apps themselves. Instead, the company describes Spark as a way for Gemini to connect information and actions across services, subject to user permissions and availability.

Real-time topic tracking and custom MCP support

Google’s blog post also says Gemini Spark now includes real-time topic tracking. That feature is designed to help users follow developing subjects over time, rather than repeatedly asking for manual updates. TechCrunch and MacRumors both reported the addition of real-time topic tracking as part of the macOS and connected-app update.

Another technical addition is custom MCP support. Google’s announcement refers to Model Context Protocol support, which is intended to let compatible tools and data sources connect with Gemini Spark. MacRumors also noted MCP support in its coverage of the release.

MCP has become a common way for AI applications to connect with external tools and data sources, but Google’s own announcement is the basis for the claim that Spark is adding custom MCP support in this release.

Why the Mac launch matters

The macOS release is important because it moves Gemini Spark into a platform where users often manage documents, downloads, folders and cloud-synced files. Google’s Gemini for macOS page gives examples such as cleaning up folders and summarizing local files into Docs or Sheets, which are more direct desktop tasks than a conventional chatbot exchange.

The update also reflects a broader shift among AI assistants toward taking actions across apps, not just generating text. However, the available source material does not establish how reliably Gemini Spark performs these tasks in practice, how many users currently have access, or how permissions are handled in every integration. For now, Google’s own documentation and coverage from MacRumors and TechCrunch confirm the launch, the main app connections, desktop-file capabilities, real-time tracking and MCP support.

Google’s rollout is therefore best understood as an expansion of Gemini Spark’s operating environment: from an assistant that can answer and plan, toward one that can act across Mac files and selected connected apps for eligible Gemini users.
