Anthropic's Claude Fable and Mythos 5.1 are the same model with different safeguards — one open, one restricted. Here's what's confirmed and what isn't.
Anthropic says Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 aren't two different models — they're the same Claude 5.1 model running under two different sets of safeguards. Fable is generally available. Mythos is restricted to vetted partners in cybersecurity and life sciences, according to Axios. It's less a typical two-model launch and more a product-policy split.
For developers, the interesting part is that access control is being treated as a first-class product decision, not an afterthought — a broadly available configuration alongside a tightly gated one for higher-risk domains. But the operational details are thin: Anthropic hasn't specified exactly which safeguards differ between the two, and there's no public detail on vetting criteria, appeals, or ongoing oversight for approved Mythos partners. That makes it hard to judge whether the gating is narrow and well-governed or just a name change with vague rules attached.
The benchmark numbers need context too. Anthropic reports 52.6% on Terminal-Bench-Science and 55.8%/60.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, plus a claimed 60% drop in cyber-safeguard interventions for Claude Code users. Solid-sounding figures — but Anthropic doesn't say which configuration produced which score, define what an "intervention" is, or share the previous baseline rate.
There's also a credibility backdrop worth noting: Anthropic previously removed a hidden Claude Code tracking mechanism after it became public, which it described as an anti-reselling experiment. That episode isn't connected to this launch — but it means new privacy claims from Anthropic deserve real scrutiny, not just a mention.
Bottom line: Anthropic is explicitly treating safeguards and access as configurable parts of one shared model — a structurally interesting move. The benchmark gains and lower interruption rate are worth watching, but they don't yet tell us how this performs, or how well-governed the Mythos gating actually is, in real-world use.
