Anthropic Says Claude Cowork Is Mostly Used for Everyday Office Work

Anthropic says an analysis of 1.2 million anonymized Claude Cowork sessions found that business operations and content creation account for roughly half of observed use, while software development represents a much smaller share.

Anthropic says Claude Cowork is being used most often for routine business operations and writing tasks rather than software development.

Office work dominates Claude Cowork usage

In a blog post titled “How people are using Claude Cowork,” Anthropic said it analyzed a May 2026 sample of 1.2 million anonymized Claude Cowork sessions. According to Anthropic, business process and operations was the largest category, accounting for 33.4% of sessions, while content creation and copywriting represented 16.4%.

Together, those two categories make up about half of the observed use. Anthropic described this kind of activity as “the work around the work,” referring to tasks such as preparing status reports, building onboarding checklists, drafting planning documents, or creating slide-deck materials.

The Decoder, summarizing Anthropic’s findings, reported that the largest use case for Claude Cowork appears to be the mundane office work that employees often need to complete but that does not necessarily belong to a single specialized role.

Software development is not the main pattern

Anthropic also said in a separate Claude blog post about bringing Claude Cowork to web and mobile that more than 90% of observed use was not software development. The company characterized the dominant use cases as everyday knowledge work, including business operations and content creation.

That finding is notable because Anthropic’s Claude products are often associated with coding, particularly through Claude Code. The Decoder reported that software development “barely shows up” in Claude Cowork usage because developers tend to use Claude Code instead.

InfoWorld also covered Anthropic’s expansion of Claude Cowork to web and mobile, citing the company’s usage analysis and repeating that business process and operations was the largest observed category at 33.4%.

What Claude Cowork is being used to produce

Based on Anthropic’s examples, Claude Cowork’s role appears to center on helping users assemble workplace materials from existing context and instructions. The company’s examples include operational documents, internal communications, planning artifacts, onboarding materials, and presentation support.

The categories reported by Anthropic suggest that many users are applying the tool to administrative and communication-heavy work: summarizing information, turning rough inputs into polished documents, organizing tasks, and producing materials for colleagues or customers.

Anthropic’s analysis does not show that Claude Cowork is replacing specific jobs, and the company’s published figures describe session categories rather than business outcomes. The sources also do not provide independent verification of the anonymized dataset beyond Anthropic’s own reporting.

Web and mobile expansion broadens access

Anthropic said Claude Cowork is rolling out to web and mobile, which could make the tool more accessible to employees outside developer workflows. InfoWorld described the expansion as part of a broader enterprise push, while noting Anthropic’s reported usage split toward business operations and content creation.

The data presented by Anthropic points to a practical pattern: when placed in a workplace setting, Claude Cowork is frequently used for documents, coordination, and process support. For now, the company’s own analysis suggests that the tool’s center of gravity is not code generation, but the routine knowledge work that surrounds meetings, projects, and internal communication.
