Microsoft expands its AI security portfolio

Microsoft has introduced MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, a cybersecurity-focused AI model, and Project Perception, a system for coordinating automated defensive security work, according to a July 27 announcement from the company and reporting by VentureBeat and Axios.

MAI-Cyber-1-Flash was developed by Microsoft AI and is integrated into MDASH, Microsoft's multi-agent framework for identifying and addressing software vulnerabilities. Microsoft said the configuration achieved a 96% result on CyberGym, a benchmark intended to measure how effectively AI systems can reason across large codebases and identify real vulnerabilities.

According to Microsoft's blog post, the MAI-Cyber-1-Flash-powered MDASH setup reached that score at almost 50% lower cost than the company's prior market configuration. VentureBeat reported that Microsoft positioned the release around a broader strategy of using smaller, specialised models when they can meet a task's requirements more economically than larger general-purpose systems.

Coordinating offensive and defensive security tasks

Project Perception is Microsoft's accompanying agentic security platform. The company describes it as a coordinated system of distinct security roles: red-team agents look for potential paths to compromise, blue-team agents investigate and prioritise risks, and green-team agents work on remediation and defensive hardening.

The design reflects a security workflow in which identifying a weakness is only one stage. Organisations must also assess whether a finding is exploitable, determine its potential impact, and apply or validate a fix. Microsoft says Project Perception is intended to bring those functions together through specialised AI components.

Axios reported that the company planned to make Project Perception available in public preview the following week. VentureBeat specified an August 3 public-preview date.

Cost and evaluation claims remain central

Microsoft's performance and cost statements are based on its CyberGym evaluation and comparison with its own previous configuration. The available source material does not provide independent benchmark methodology, underlying test cases, or detailed pricing figures. As a result, the 96% score and near-50% cost reduction should be understood as company-reported results rather than independently verified comparisons.
