OpenAI Backs Down: Pro 200 Cut Cancelled, Pro 100 and Pro 500 Get Double the Work and Codex Usage

OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance on ChatGPT Pro 100 and Pro 500 on October 29, and cancelled the planned reduction for Pro 200. Monthly prices stay at $100, $200, and $500, with no price change in the announcement. The Decoder independently reported the same plan-level changes.

What changed, plan by plan.

Pro 100 and Pro 500: both now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance.

Pro 200: OpenAI cancelled the reduction it announced in a September 29 email. Subscribers who already had the higher allowance keep it, and those on the lower allowance get twice their previous amount, bringing them up to the same limit. So for Pro 200, the effect is that everyone ends up on the higher level.

Business Premium: OpenAI names the plan and says usage increased, but its pages don’t give a figure.

What the cut would have been. According to BigGo Finance, the September 29 email told some Pro 200 users that their Work and Codex limits would drop from 20 times ChatGPT Plus to 10 times, and that their weekly GPT-6 Pro message limit would be halved from 200 to 100, with the $200 price unchanged. Crypto Briefing reports the cut was due to start on October 30. These details come from secondary reporting, not OpenAI’s release notes.

Why OpenAI changed course. Tibo, who leads Codex at OpenAI, said in a post on X that the company heard user feedback and won’t reduce Pro 200 limits. That’s the most OpenAI has said. Reports that tie the reversal to competition with Anthropic’s IPO are speculation, and nothing in OpenAI’s materials supports them.

It’s narrower than “all usage limits.” Tibo’s post says all usage limits are doubled, but the release notes limit the doubling to the Work and Codex allowance, and the weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat stay where they were. He also said the extended limits for dots continue for now, and that usage of a dot is counted separately from default usage. Pro tiers currently have no five-hour cap in Work and Codex, but the included usage can still run out.

What OpenAI hasn’t published. The release notes give no absolute numbers for the old or new limits, no reset windows, and no detailed rules for how Work and Codex usage is counted. A “doubled” allowance only helps you plan if you can see what it was before. For context, Pro 100 launched in April as a plan built for longer, high-intensity Codex sessions.

Bottom line: Subscribers on the named plans get more room, and Pro 200 users avoid a downgrade, which is the first time in this saga that limits moved up instead of down. But without published limits or counting rules, the update is easier to welcome than to plan around. If you rely on Codex or Work, check your own usage against the Pro tiers page rather than assuming the new level covers you.
