OpenAI GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Codex become generally available on Amazon Bedrock

Amazon and AWS say OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Codex are now generally available on Amazon Bedrock through the Responses API, with AWS publishing model IDs, regional availability and setup details for developers.

Amazon says OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Codex are now generally available on Amazon Bedrock, expanding the set of third-party AI models that AWS customers can access through the managed Bedrock service.

OpenAI models arrive through Bedrock’s Responses API

In an announcement on About Amazon, Amazon said GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Codex are available on Amazon Bedrock through the Responses API. The company said pricing matches OpenAI’s first-party rates and that AWS is not adding extra fees for use through Bedrock.

AWS also published a technical launch post in the AWS News Blog describing how developers can get started with the new OpenAI models on Bedrock. According to AWS, the release includes general availability, model identifiers, API examples, supported AWS Regions and configuration guidance for Codex.

The launch gives AWS customers another route to use OpenAI models without leaving the Bedrock environment. Amazon Bedrock is AWS’s managed service for accessing foundation models from multiple providers, applying enterprise controls and integrating model calls with AWS infrastructure.

Model IDs and developer setup

The AWS News Blog says developers can call the OpenAI models using Bedrock model IDs, including entries for GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4. The same AWS post provides example code for making calls through the Responses API and outlines the Regions where the models are available at launch.

OpenAI has also published a Help Center article explaining how to configure Codex with Amazon Bedrock credentials. In that documentation, OpenAI lists supported model IDs including openai.gpt-5.5 and openai.gpt-5.4, and describes the steps needed to connect Codex to Bedrock.

Codex is OpenAI’s coding-focused system for software development tasks. The OpenAI Help Center article specifically focuses on using Codex with Bedrock credentials, which suggests AWS customers can route supported Codex workflows through Amazon’s managed model access layer.

What changes for AWS customers

For organizations already using Amazon Bedrock, the main change is procurement and integration convenience. Instead of setting up separate access paths for OpenAI models, teams can use Bedrock’s existing authentication, networking and governance patterns where supported.

Amazon’s statement that prices match OpenAI’s first-party rates is notable for buyers comparing direct OpenAI access with Bedrock-based deployment. The About Amazon announcement says there are no additional AWS fees for these OpenAI models on Bedrock, though customers should still review the official pricing pages and their own AWS usage patterns before estimating costs.

The AWS News Blog’s inclusion of Regions and configuration steps is also important for enterprise deployment. Availability by Region can determine whether a customer can use a model for workloads tied to data residency, latency or internal compliance requirements.

A broader model marketplace move

The announcement continues Amazon’s strategy of positioning Bedrock as a single managed access point for models from multiple AI providers. Adding OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4 and Codex gives AWS customers more model choice within that framework, while OpenAI gains another enterprise distribution channel through AWS.

The available source material does not describe exclusive features, performance comparisons or benchmark results for the Bedrock versions of the models. For now, the concrete details are access through Amazon Bedrock’s Responses API, AWS-published setup guidance, OpenAI’s Codex configuration documentation, and Amazon’s statement on pricing parity with no extra Bedrock fees.
