The $200 ChatGPT Plan Now Means Different Things to Different People
OpenAI has confirmed a $500/month Pro 500 plan with Astra Ultrafast. New $200 Pro subscribers now get a lower allowance than some existing users, until October 29.
OpenAI has officially documented a $500-per-month ChatGPT tier, Pro 500, which includes a feature called Astra Ultrafast, according to the company's own help page. That confirms what BleepingComputer reported on September 25 after spotting a $500 "Pro Max" option surfacing in ChatGPT's interface — though it's not established whether Pro Max was an early name for Pro 500, an internal label, or a distinct offer that changed before launch.
The more interesting detail sits one tier down. OpenAI says new subscribers to the $200-per-month Pro 200 plan now get a lower usage allowance than certain existing Pro 200 customers — and those existing users only keep their previous allowance until October 29, 2026. That means, for a stretch of time, two people can pay the identical $200 and get genuinely different service. OpenAI hasn't published the exact allowance for either group, the unit it's measured in, or the reset period, so there's no way to quantify the gap right now — just confirmation that it exists.
This follows a real disruption: Computerworld reported OpenAI paused new Pro 200 sign-ups entirely on September 10, citing demand for Astra straining system capacity. The tier has now reopened, but with this new wrinkle attached. Neither OpenAI's documentation nor the earlier reporting fully explains why the lower allowance was introduced, whether it's permanent past October, or how capacity gets split between Pro 200 and Pro 500 users going forward.
Bottom line: OpenAI now has a clearly named $500 high-end tier with Astra Ultrafast access. But the more practically important change is for Pro 200 subscribers specifically — the plan name and price no longer guarantee a uniform amount of access. If you're paying for Pro 200, the useful question isn't "what does this plan cost," it's "what allowance is actually attached to my account, and when does it change."
