Apple Intelligence Arrives in China on Alibaba’s Qwen. The New Siri Stays Home.

Apple said on October 31 that it will bring a first set of Apple Intelligence features to iPhones in mainland China, with Alibaba’s Qwen powering parts of Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence. A developer beta of iOS 27.3 arrives on Wednesday, November 4 in China, which likely means November 3 in the US, and the public release follows in December with no specific date. The December date is Apple’s plan, so it could change.

What’s included. The first release brings Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up, Notification Summaries, Priority Notifications, Visual Intelligence, and Live Translation with AirPods to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer in China. Both the iPhone and Siri language need to be set to English and Simplified Chinese.

What’s left out. Apple says its next-generation Siri AI and the other Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026 won’t be available in China on iOS 27.3, and Image Playground won’t be either. Mac, iPad, and other devices will wait until Apple receives the necessary approvals. So this is a China-specific first wave, not feature parity with Apple’s broader AI roadmap.

How Qwen appears. Users can ask Qwen questions about text, images, and documents through Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence, and can sign in with a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. Writing Tools gets a “Compose with Qwen” option for generating original text and images, and Visual Intelligence gets an “Ask Qwen” option for identifying real-world objects and locations. Alibaba has said it expects Qwen to reach Apple Intelligence across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS in China eventually.

What Alibaba says about data. Users can choose whether to enable the Qwen integration and what information to share, and Alibaba says it won’t use requests or generated responses to train its models. The feature is available on iPhones bought in China, or where both the device location and Apple Account region are set to China. The RTHK report, citing Xinhua, matches the schedule and Alibaba’s commitments.

What hasn’t been disclosed. The announcements don’t say which Qwen models will be used, where requests are processed, how long data may be kept, or how Apple and Alibaba divide data-handling responsibilities. So Alibaba’s training commitment is supported, but broader conclusions about the system’s privacy properties aren’t. China’s Cyberspace Administration published filing information in July for seven on-device generative-AI services. That gives some regulatory context, but the notice alone doesn’t show which Apple Intelligence features or integrations it covers.

Bottom line: Apple has announced a route for selected Apple Intelligence features in China, with Alibaba’s Qwen handling some Siri, writing, and visual requests, and without its newest Siri. What to watch next is the exact feature list at launch and the technical and privacy details Apple and Alibaba publish, including how requests are processed.
